Set on Cape Cod at the turn of the century, three retired sea captains living together decide that the only way to keep their house in order is for one of them to get married. There is just one problem, none of them wants to get married.
They decide to flip a coin and Captain Jerry Burgess (Rip Torn) loses. They place an ad for a mail order bride in a big city newspaper and a woman from Nantucket named Martha Snow (Mariel Hemingway) responds. Captain Jerry immediately gets cold feet.
In a humorous series of events, Captain Perez (Bruce Dern) hatches a plan to keep Martha in town while Captain Jerry works up his confidence to propose. However, it is Captain Zeb (David Carradine) who falls in love with her and proposes.
